Commercial

Commercial space includes fast food, retail, and services as well as any business related options. There must be a notice on how many people can safely occupy the space. This allows the consumer to make decisions based on how packed a space might be. The space will depend on its use, but all buildings must be built with concrete or steel. All glass windows must be tempered glass for the safety of the customers.

Assuming that each premise does not have its own water meter, the premise owner is required to include water and sewage, and must be paid to the local water and sewage authority. There can be no gas line. This is to push for an environmentally sound future by pushing out obsolete utilities. While likely more expensive, there are electric grills and electric ovens. Therefore, a pizza shoppe will still be able to produce their pizza using an oven. It is just that oven must be electric.

As for electricity, the tenant is responsible for the electric service in their premise if the owner has separate utilities. If the owner does not have separate utilities, then the owner is responsible for the electric service. Along with the standard use of electricity, light bulbs must be LED. Since this will be the required default for new bulbs, it should be hard to violate this rule. If a business needs incandescent or fluorescent lighting, they can receive an exemption from DOH. Heating and hot water will also be electric only. The electrical lines must be in armored cable electrical runs.

Trash will be handled by the local garbage collection service. This will require that the business recycles all of their recyclables which should be 95%+ of their trash. They will be required to acquire blue bags for recyclables, and green bags for food waste, and other trash. The premise user might choose to elect using another collection service if there is enough room for a dumpster. Even so, there is still a requirement of responsible waste disposal.

Communications is another important factor. If there is a fax line, the business must acquire a dedicated telephone number that will end in 0. This is so a customer doesn’t accidentally call a fax line, and have to listen to that tone. In addition, the person sending a fax will know right away if they have a fax number since all fax numbers must end in 0. All businesses must have a business license, and therefore a Business ID number. All telephone lines must use SIP for calls. Any old POTS telephones must connect to an ATA where the device will plug into the ATA, and the ATA will plug into the LAN. If there is a call center, it will make sense to acquire a telephony server to where select numbers can ring different divisions.

It is the choice of the business to offer internet services to the customer. If internet is provided, the customer might need to ask for the passphrase for access to the guest account. However, it might make more sense to just have an open network for guests. All access points must be towards the center of the premise for the widest coverage available. All access points must support POE, and those jacks must be yellow to denote POE requirements. Anyone providing free internet is given safe harbor. Safe Harbor is the process of not pursuing charges for what their customers do as long as they cooperate. This means if a customer was downloading child porn, the business can give access to law enforcement of all device’s usage and access.

For television, the premise tenant is in charge of deciding if they will provide television services. If this is the case, then the premise tenant will likely put on one channel and keep that channel on during operation hours. The customer is not required to view the channel they wish to view. All television communications must be done through the LAN and therefore connect to the WAN. This means businesses will not have OTA television without receiving an exemption. Typically, an exemption will only be provided to rural communities where broadband internet is not available.
